Point of Care Ultrasound

Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is a diagnostic imaging technique used in our clinical setting to provide real-time visual assessment of the foot and lower limb. This portable and non-invasive technology allows our podiatrists to quickly evaluate and diagnose musculoskeletal, soft tissue, and vascular conditions, leading to more accurate and timely treatment decisions. If the Podiatrist deems necessary, a referral for a Radiology Ultrasound will be issued.

Please note – Nicholas is currently our only Podiatrist trained to use Point of Care Ultrasound.

Benefits of Point of Care Ultrasound

Real-Time Imaging

Provides immediate visual feedback, allowing for quick and accurate diagnosis.

Non-Invasive

A safe and non-invasive method with no radiation exposure.

Enhanced Accuracy

Improves diagnostic accuracy by providing detailed images of internal structures.

Immediate Feedback

Enables real-time assessment and guidance during procedures, enhancing precision and patient safety.

Indications for Point of Care Ultrasound

POCUS is used to evaluate a variety of conditions, including:

Musculoskeletal Injuries

Assessment of sprains, strains, tears, and other injuries to muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Soft Tissue
Conditions

Evaluation of conditions such as bursitis, cysts, and abscesses.

Inflammatory Conditions

Detection of inflammation in conditions such as plantar fasciitis or tendinitis.

Pre-Procedural Guidance

Guiding needle placement for injections, aspirations, or biopsies.

How Does Point of Care Ultrasound Work?

POCUS uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of internal structures. The procedure involves:

Ultrasound Probe

A small handheld device, called a transducer, is placed on the skin over the area of interest. The probe emits sound waves and captures the echoes that bounce back from tissues and organs.

Image Display

The reflected sound waves are converted into real-time images displayed on a monitor. These images help our podiatrists assess the condition of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Diagnosis and Treatment: Based on the ultrasound findings, our podiatrists can make accurate diagnoses and guide appropriate treatment plans or interventions.
